Conventional ethics decree we must not betray the trust of another. Loyalty is not simply a praiseworthy virtue in the eyes of some, but a mandate to be enforced.
It is one thing to find an infiltrator in our midst, one who only pretended to be on the same side to gain trust and access. But is this betrayal, or were we just tricked?
One can be accused of betrayal by simply changing one’s mind, political affiliation, or sports team. By adopting a neutral stance in an argument. By falling in love. Or out of love. By writing an unexpected ending to a story.
In the end, the only one with the power to truly betray you is yourself. And the only one you must not betray… is yourself.
